Thực tế ảo - Virtual Reality - (VR) là một trải nghiệm mô phỏng có thể giống hoặc khác hoàn toàn với thế giới thực. Các loại khác, công nghệ phong cách VR khác biệt bao gồm thực tế tăng cường và thực tế hỗn hợp. Thực tế ảo là công nghệ giúp con người có thể “cảm nhận” không gian mô phỏng một cách chân thực hơn nhờ vào một loại kính nhìn 3 chiều (kính thực tế ảo). Môi trường 3D ảo này được tạo ra và điều khiển bởi một hệ thống máy tính cấu hình cao. Chính nhờ khả năng phản hồi theo thời gian thực mà hệ thống VR biết cách tái tạo và biến đổi môi trường 3D cho phù hợp với hoàn cảnh. Trường hợp này, con người ra quyết định bằng các hành động hoặc suy nghĩ, các cảm biến sẽ thu nhận những tín hiệu điện và từ đó máy tính phân tích và cho ra một môi trường ảo mới theo một nguyên lý hoặc thuật toán dựng sẵn. VR được ứng dụng trong mọi lĩnh vực: Khoa học kỹ thuật, kiến trúc, quân sự, giải trí, y học…
